Sir William Wallace Hotel, Balmain

My memory of the William Wallace amounts to a somewhat drunken haze, where after a very long pub crawl beginning down at the East Balmain Ferry Wharf, we were faced with an insurmountable split in the pub crawl ranks at the previous Dry Dock Hotel.  One half was looking to nurse the coming hangover within quieter surrounds, whilst the second was looking to release themselves into the assault of the American prairie cats of the Monkey Bar.

As the split came to fruition, the more sorry looking (and feeling) remnants of this first group wandered up Cameron Street to what appeared an oasis of quiet beer swilling on the corner of Short Street.  How we were so wrong is unknown.  Wandering in we took a seat at one of the smallest bars in Sydney, which amounted to a small room which was reduced in size by a third by the presence of a pool table and a second smaller room with 10 or so pokies.  After sipping on our beers for a few minutes, we noticed a large mural on one of the walls (the fact it took us this long to notice the mural which takes up the entirety of the rear wall is testament to the sorry state that we were in) and this is when the trouble started.  What you may notice about the mural is the colour of the skin of all the people in it, with the exception of a single man who was described to me by one of the locals as a 'sneaky little black fella' peering through the doorway.  After a long discussion about this with the bar staff who defended it by stating it was heritage listed and then continued that Mel Gibson drank there as a youngster and liked it (which did nothing to support his case), we were thrown out onto the street by the assembled pack of locals and had to continue the pub crawl at the next watering hole, which sadly due to the pub's isolation is quite a walk away.

In summary, the pub is very much a local pub with a small seating area, a pool table, a small collection of antique pokies, a jukebox and smoking out the front of the pub.  The pub runs happy hours every weekday from 3pm to 5pm and has free pool all day Sunday.

The food menu largerly consists of the traditional pub fare with the presence of a few edgier (for this pub) options involving greek and italian influences.  So very much in the 1980s but from the reviews they supply on their website (which would give the Space Jam website a run for its money) very nicely done.  The items are listed below;
